With Wake Smarter you can customize your alarm to read information that’s important to you, such as weather, your calendar reminders, birthdays, the morning’s headline news, sports scores, your horoscope or even the joke of the day. You decide!
Wake Up & Sleep to Your Favorite Sounds
Can’t do without music in the morning? Need soothing sounds to help you fall asleep in the evening? Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question that is not covered in this FAQ or you’re having troubles with your Wake Smarter app, email us at email@example.com and we’ll get back to you within 24 hours.
Q: What if the app crashes or freezes up?
A: In the unlikely event that this happens, we would appreciate if you could send us the crash report to firstname.lastname@example.org. To get a copy of your crash report, follow these instructions:
First connect your device with a computer and sync iTunes. Then you need to navigate to the folder where iTunes copied any crash reports. This depends on what platform you are using (in Windows, remember first to “show hidden files, folders and drives” in the Control Panel)
- Mac OS X: ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<DEVICE_NAME>
- Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\<DEVICE_NAME>
- Windows Vista or 7: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice\<DEVICE_NAME>
<USERNAME> is the user’s login name for the computer. <DEVICE_NAME> is the name of the iPod touch, iPhone or iPad, for example, “Scott’s iPhone”.
We are only interested in .crash files. The crash report’s file name will begin with “WakeSmarter” and contain date/time information. In addition, <DEVICE_NAME> will appear at the end of the file name, before the extension.
Here’s an example of a WakeSmarter crash filename: WakeSmarter_2011-01-03-024833_Scotts-iPhone4.crash
Q: Can I set more than one alarm?
A: Yes. You can set as many alarms as you wish. For instance, you might wish to set one for during the week and one for weekends. However, please note that the alarm actions must be the same for each different alarm that you set.
Q: How customizable is my wake up alarm?
A: With Wake Smarter, you could literally go the entire year with a completely different wake up alarm every day. You can choose from a huge assortment of content and have it read to you in any order you wish. For instance, you could wake up to soothing classical music, followed by a weather report and then business news followed by sports scores followed by your calendar events for the day. Or maybe you also want to include your Facebook and Twitter feeds so you can get a jump on what’s going on with your friends. It’s completely up to you how you want to start your day.
Q: What is Magic Word and why do I need to choose one?
A: To communicate with Wake Smarter, you must first choose a “Magic Word” that enables the app to listen to your commands. Just call out your chosen magic word and Wake Smarter’s attention will turn to you…ask away! To set your magic word go to Settings > Magic Word.
Q: What’s the Sleep Timer for?
A: Wake Smarter’s Sleep Timer allows you to fall asleep to audio books or podcasts or your favorite music from your playlist, Internet radio stations or any one of our pre-recorded super soothing sleep sounds. And there’s no need to worry about the audio playing all night. Wake Smarter will automatically stop the audio playback once the timer you’ve set runs out.
Q: Is it harmful to leave my device’s screen on all day or night?
A: No. Modern screens such as those used in iPhones and iPads do not suffer from screen burn-in. So you can leave your iPhone or IPad’s screen on all night without causing any damage to your device.
Q: How do I add my own RSS News Feed to Wake Smarter?
A: Wake Smarter comes pre-programmed with News Feeds from some of the top news sites on the web, but there may be a special Feed that you want to receive. To add a News Feed go to your favorite website and click on the orange “RSS” icon to open the feed in your browser window. Then simply copy the URL and paste it into the “Custom” tab under Alarm Actions > Add Action > News Feeds on Wake Smarter.
Q: What if I forget to open Wake Smarter before I go to bed?
A: No worries. Wake Smarter will still sound an alarm if you have previously set one. It will not, however, be the same alarm you set but you will hear a backup alarm instead. This alarm is limited to 30 seconds, which is, unfortunately, a limitation of iOS 4 that we have no control over.
Q: Will my alarms sound if I have my iPhone’s silent switch enabled?
A: Yes, as long as Wake Smarter is open and running.
Q: How do I get my calendar events read to me in the morning?
A: Wake Smarter pulls information from your iPhone or iPad’s Calendar app. Just add reminders and notes to your calendar, set an Alarm Action for Calendar Events and they’ll be read out to you when your alarm activates.
Q: How do I get the Joke of the Day, the Daily Inspiration or my Horoscope read to me in the morning?
A: Just go to Alarm Actions > Add Action > News Feed and then scroll down the list until you find the Feed you want.
Q: How do I stop the alarm?
A: There are three ways to stop the alarm: 1) Shake the device. 2) Swipe the “Slide to Stop” arrow. 3) Press the iPhone home button.
Q: How do I snooze the alarm?
A: To put the alarm into snooze mode, “long press” the iPhone screen and hold for 2 seconds. Do not forget to set the snooze time in the Settings screen.
Q: Can I skip through some alarm actions when my alarm is activated?
A: Yes. When the alarm is activated, tap the iPhone’s screen to skip to the next alarm action. However, you must have more than one alarm action set for this to work.
Q: Is Wake Smarter always listening to my commands?
A: If you set the device to “Always Active” under “Magic Word” in the Settings tab, Wake Smarter will always be listening. However, please note that the app will only be continuously active if your iPhone is charging or the battery level is over 25%. It will also be de-activated if it has not been used for 10 minutes. You can also set the app to “Not Active”. If it is set to “Not Active” or changes to “Not Active” because of the conditions mentioned above, you must press the microphone icon to use voice commands.
Q: Can I re-order the “Alarm Actions” once I have set them?
A: Yes. Just put your finger over the icon with the three bars that appears to the right of the name of the Action that you have set and drag the item up or down.
